Voice of Democracy (VOD)
VOD is a non-profit radio station that originally began airing in January 2003 under the supervision of the Cambodian Center for Human Rights (CCHR). In 2007, it started to operate under the umbrella of the Cambodian Center for Independent Media after Kem Sokha, the founder and director of CCHR entered politics. As CCIM attempted several times to be granted a broadcasting license from the Ministry of Information in vain, VOD started to broadcast its programming on the airwaves of Sarika FM, of which CCIM hires its license.
Today, VOD receives its funding from the Open Society Foundations, a US grant fund founded by George Soros, DanChurchAid, a Danish Christian aid organisation, and Diakonia, a Swedish Christian human rights organisation that works on land rights issues in Cambodia.
It covers mainly current affairs and has local reporters and correspondents in Cambodia's provinces. In 2013, VOD launched its online version, VODHotNews.com and VODTVNews.com. In August 25, 2017, local media reported that VOD has been taken off the airwaves in what its director derided as a politically motivated move ahead of next year’s general election. The Cambodian Center for Independent Media, which runs VOD, said in a statement that the NGO’s radio station partners stopped broadcasting its radio shows this week “without clear reasons.” The removal of VOD from the airwaves comes amid an onslaught from the government against independent media.

The Cambodian media landscape counts at least two new outlets, a TV and a newspaper. Since the former started its daily activity and the latter its broadcasting in 2015, MOM decided not to include as most relevant medium. With less than a year of existence, the audience shares would not be representative of their popularity.
It can be highlighted, however, that their growth is taking place rapidly and their strategy seems more aggressive than the existing media on the market. Both are now hiring journalists and newsroom staffs from existing newsrooms, heightening the competition on both TV and print sectors, which are already highly concentrated.
